Project Name: Van Andel Institute (Cancer Research Laboratory)
Location: Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA
Architect: Rafael Viñoly Architects
Key Innovation: 3-E Glazing with Suspended Film Technology
Core Keywords: Rafael Viñoly Architecture, Laboratory Glazing, Suspended Film Technology, Cold Climate Windows, Thermal Stability

Designed by the legendary Rafael Viñoly, the Van Andel Institute is a masterpiece of structural expressionism. Known for his revolutionary use of glass, Viñoly envisioned a cascading, terraced roof that floods a high-precision research laboratory with natural light. He challenged the industry to move beyond the "concrete box" lab and create a transparent environment that fosters scientific inspiration.

Viñoly’s vision faced a massive technical hurdle: Grand Rapids, Michigan, is one of the harshest cold-climate environments in the U.S. In a cancer research facility, even a 1-degree temperature fluctuation can compromise months of scientific work. Traditional glazing was either too heavy for the cascading structure or too inefficient to protect the laboratory's thermal stability during sub-zero winters.
To resolve Viñoly’s "Glass Lab Paradox," UltraSlim deployed the Suspended Film (Heat Mirror) technology—a solution that offers triple-pane performance at double-pane weight:
R-Value Excellence: By utilizing Suspended Film Technology, the glass envelope achieved the insulation levels of a solid wall, meeting Viñoly’s demand for absolute transparency.
Structural Freedom: The lightweight nature of the 3-E system allowed for the minimalist profiles required by Viñoly’s complex cascading geometry.
Laboratory-Grade Protection: The system ensures zero condensation and zero drafts, protecting million-dollar scientific equipment even when Michigan’s exterior temperatures plummet.
