H18 Shanghai | Active House Landmark & Sustainable Urban Renewal

Project Snapshot

• Project Name: Shanghai H18 Technology Research Institute
• Location: Tianlin Road, Xuhui District, Shanghai
• Architect: YAYI Design & HEYI Design Management
• Performance Standard: Active House Alliance Gold Certification
• Core Keywords: Active House Shanghai, Sustainable Urban Renewal, High-Performance Retrofit.

The Concept | Redefining the "Invisible" Boundary in Urban Renewal

The H18 project serves as the premier demonstration of the Active House standard in China. The architectural vision was to breathe new life into an outdated industrial structure in Shanghai’s Xuhui District, transforming it into a high-performance innovation hub. The goal was to prove that sustainable urban renewal can be both architecturally transparent and environmentally responsible.

The Challenge | The High-Performance Paradox of Retrofitting

Retrofitting a legacy building in a humid-subtropical metropolis like Shanghai presents a unique paradox: how to maximize natural daylighting while minimizing the "Urban Heat Island" effect. The project required a glazing solution that could integrate with the historic red-brick facade while meeting the world’s most stringent energy-efficiency and net-zero-ready criteria.

The UltraSlim Solution | Engineering for Human-Centric Comfort

UltraSlim was the exclusive partner selected to realize this Active House landmark:

  • Active House Optimization: By maximizing the glass-to-frame ratio, our Slimline Series achieved a daylight factor that significantly enhances occupant well-being.

  • Advanced Thermal Integrity: Our thermally broken aluminum frames provided the necessary thermal shield to maintain indoor climate stability during Shanghai’s extreme seasonal shifts.

  • Carbon Conscious Design: The project highlights the power of the "Retrofit Revolution," using UltraSlim technology to extend the life of an existing structure while drastically reducing its embodied carbon footprint.
